The Bestselling Book - The Bible |
|
Billions of people
read the Bible; some occasionally, many regularly. Millions more want to
read it. There is an endless interest in this ancient collection
of books which can speak powerfully to our modern world.
Why read it ? If our sole reason is to gain knowledge of Bible times and peoples - to become a kind of Bible quiz expert - then we may miss the point. It's writers intended more than to deepen their reader's knowledge: they aimed to change lives. Christians regard the Bible as uniquely inspired by God. Others, not Christian, also set a high value on this book. Thomas Huxley, a 19th century agnostic and evolutionary pioneer, said of the Bible: "This book has been woven into the life of all that is best and noblest in Western civilization." Of course the language of the Bible has penetrated Western culture, but Huxley meant more than that. The Bible has changed the lives of countless individuals, and through them has had a profound influence for good on the moral and cultural life. This influence now spreads far beyond the West. Where has this unique power come from ? All Christian churches agree that the Bible is inspired by God and authoritative for life and belief. Why ? The word inspiration
means 'God Breathed'. It comes from the belief that every human being has
his or her lungs inflated by God's breath at birth, and that at death one's
breath is given back to him.
The Bible is a channel thorough which the light of God's truth comes to us. It covers a period of over a 1000 years and it's last words were written almost 2000 years ago. It is divided into two testaments (better called 'covenants', agreements between God and humanity). Within each testament there are several different kinds of writing. The Old Testament consists of 39 books and is sacred to the Jews and the Christians. The New Testament consists of 27 books and is sacred to the Christians. The central figure in the Bible is God and the message of the Bible is salvation of man. Please get hold of a Bible from the nearest bookstore.
